1. I would like to self publish a book but I don’t know where to start.
The first step is to identify your goals. Do you want to be an author or do you want to be a publisher? They are two different things. An author is a good writer. A publisher is a business person. Which one are you?
2. I know that I have a great idea for a book but I’m not sure that my writing skills are adequate. Can I learn how to write?
Absolutely! Writing is a learned skill. Anyone can learn to communicate effectively in writing and anyone can learn how to write a book. At Ink Tree we have a huge list of experts who can help you with many of your writing and publishing issues. Please look through our list of publishing links and resources Click Here
3. I want to write and publish my own book. What do I do now?
You need to have a good understanding of the publishing industry, you need a business plan and you must outline your budget. You also must define your objectives – why are you writing a book, what are you writing about, who is your market? Your best starting point is 101 Things You Need to Know About Publishing. 4. I have been told that I have to get professional help to self publish a book, but I don’t know how to find a graphic designer, an editor or a printer. Where should I look?
We agree with the people you have been talking to! If you want to publish a professional book that will sell, it has to look as good as the books produced by the major publishing houses because they are your competition. Do not try to edit or design your own book! If you do, it will look “self published” and no one will buy it. We can help you to find the help you need. Click Here for Publishing Resources
5. I already have thousands of books printed but I don’t know what to do with them. Help! What should I do?
You need a solid book marketing plan. When your book is printed, the real (and fun) work of publishing begins – selling! We can help you to design your own publishing marketing plan so that you start making those sales. Click Here for Book Marketing Help
6. Are there places to sell books other than bookstores?
There certainly are, and some of these places buy THOUSANDS of books on a non-returnable basis. With these companies, a sale is actually a sale! You can sell to display retailers, catalogs, gift buyers, corporations and more… In our self publishing course,
The Essential Book Publishing Guide, we give you contact information for many non-traditional places to sell your books. Click Here for Marketing Help
7. I would like to increase my bookstore sales. How can I do that?
You need to let the world know that your book exists. If no one knows about your book, no one will buy it. An effective, on-going publicity campaign will create attention for your book and will drive people to the bookstores to buy it. You will need an eye-grabbing, professional media kit so that the media wants to do a story about YOU and about YOUR book. Please see our Media Kit Template to design your own killer media kit.
