WHAT SHOULD YOU
WRITE ABOUT?
Interestingly, some people think that they can
write about anything. Recently we were asked this question: “I would
like to sell large numbers of books. I can write about anything.
What do you suggest would sell well?”
The answer is: you cannot write about just anything. In order to be
credible you need credentials. It is soon apparent to a reader if
your information is superficial. You must write about something for
which you have great passion or considerable experience and/or
education. You "can fool some of the people some of the time but not
all of the people all of the time".
As an author, your goal is definitely to sell books, but if you want
to sell books you have to write with your reader in mind. After all,
that is the person who will buy your book and the primary question
in that buyer's mind when looking at the book is, "What's in it for
me?"
If the book doesn't offer something life changing or absolutely
fascinating or information that they cannot find in a better format,
the buyer moves on to another book. The buyer is looking for
information, for the solution to a problem or for entertainment. He
or she will buy the book that best answers his or her needs.
Incomplete, inaccurate or insincere writing won’t work. You, as the
author, must be able to prove that your information is valid.
The age old advice of writing about what you know is so true. Follow
that advice and you are on the right track to writing a best seller.

Questions from Self Publishers
Q: "What do I have to
prepare to send to the volume sellers? Is it the sales sheet? Is
that what they want or something else? Is this the only thing they
accept or are there alternatives?"
A: For
display market buyers, you should have a sell sheet, a cover
letter, and a discount schedule. For corporate buyers, include a
proposal that sells them on the benefits they will receive by
using your book as a promotional item.
