It's that time of year again... we're rounding up
books to send to the Frankfurt Book Fair in pursuit of foreign
rights sales. Foreign rights sales can be a great addition to your
book marketing campaign and can add another revenue stream to your
self publishing business. How do you know if you have a good chance
of selling your foreign rights? That's what this month's article is
all about. Read on...
FOREIGN RIGHTS
BOOK SALES
Is My Book a
Good Candidate?
When you write a book and/or when you publish a book, your goal is
to sell the book in as many places as you possibly can. Other than
selling to book stores, which account for only a small percentage of
sales for successful self-publishers, you can sell your book to
hundreds of buyers. You just need to target those buyers accurately.
One market that is frequently over-looked by self-publishers is the
foreign rights market. Publishers from all over the world look for
books that have been written in countries other than their own. They
are looking for books that have a fresh perspective on a subject, or
information that might not be available in their own realm, so they
turn to foreign authors.
When people ask us whether they should pursue foreign rights sales,
we always respond with, “Why wouldn’t you?” The process is very
simple: you sign a contract, you provide the electronic files for
the book and you collect the check. This is “found money” – you do
not have to bear any financial costs for the production or marketing
of the book.
Of course, there are issues that must be covered in the contract,
such as:
• time period being granted
• geographic area that is allowed to sell the book
• language in which the book can be published
• format – size of book, hard cover, soft cover, etc.
• market – book stores only, gift market, book clubs, corporations…
• other rights: electronic, movie…
• copyright ownership
Not all books are suitable for the foreign rights market, however.
There are criteria that must be met for your book to be a good
candidate:
• must be professionally designed
• must be professionally edited
• must appeal to a wide market
• must not be targeted to a local market only
Having your book published in foreign languages grants it great
credibility. Be sure to add the news to all of your promotional
materials and talk about it in all of your interviews.
The largest foreign rights sales market in the world is the
Frankfurt Book Fair which is held every year in October. The cost
for a self-publisher with a single title or just a few titles is not
economically feasible, so the most effective means of having your
book(s) represented is by an experienced agent. If you feel that
your book is a good candidate for the foreign rights market, take
action!

Parentally Insane:
Insights From The Edge...of Midlife!
Julie Donner
Andersen, Author
Available at:
www.juliedonnerandersen.com
Wear your girdle over your straight jacket with pride and laugh
along with the author as she highlights the perks and problems faced
by women over the age of 35 whose kids and husbands are forcing them
into the proverbial Funny Farm. Fabulously illustrated by the
cartoonists at Steele Studios, this new humor book is a rip roaring,
laugh-a-minute funfest that will have you shouting "Hey, that's MY
life she's talking about!" Equal parts Erma Bombeck and Gloria
Steinem, the author has created a book that sparkles from beginning
to end with honesty, insight, and a celebration of that mystical,
magical kingdom called Midlife Motherhood, making it a masterpiece
of daring truths and family hilarity.

What Can We Do
Next? The Adventures of Lexie & Lolly
Toula Magi, Author
http://www.toulamagi.com/
“What Can We Do Next?”, is a story about, Lexie, a
little girl who’s upset that it’s raining outside and she can’t play
on her swing set. So, she decides to create an imaginary friend.
Together they go on all kinds of adventures, even though they’re
stuck indoors. They go on a hot-air balloon ride, a picnic, as
astronauts they take a trip to the moon, and as pirates, they look
for buried treasure.
Children today get bored very easily when it’s raining, or when they
don’t have some place to go. Without outdoor items such as swing
sets, skateboards and bikes, or indoor items such as TVs, computers
and video games, most children don’t know what to do with
themselves. It’s rare today that children actually think to use
their imagination to go anywhere they want to go or be anything they
want to be. This book shows kids that they can use their imagination
to conjure up their own fun, any time, any place. When you use your
imagination, there is no limit to what can be done!
