Are You Really
SELF
Publishing?
Are you really and truly SELF
publishing your book? Many self publishers are very successful,
selling thousands of copies of their books – but, they are truly the
publishers. At this point, it might help to actually define self
publishing. Wikipedia defines self publishing as ” the publishing of
books and other media by the authors of those works, rather than by
established, third-party publishers”. We agree. Self publishing does
not mean that you sign a contract with a subsidy publisher, vanity
press or any other type of publishing “service”.
Self publishing means that
you are the publisher. You are in control of all of the following
aspects of the book:
- writing the text
- hiring the editor
- finding the book designer
- sourcing and owning the rights to any photographs or graphics
- owning the ISBN and the Cataloging Information
- owning the electronic files
- obtaining the copyright in your own name
- finding printers and getting quotes
- getting distribution
- managing the publicity
- designing the marketing campaign (finding buyers)
One of the biggest advantages of
self publishing is that you are the owner of the electronic
files. Most publishing services tell you that you own the copyright,
which is true, but they own the files. If you decide at some future
date that you want to find another printer, you will have to
purchase the files from the publishing service - if in fact they
will release them to you.
Another advantage to true self publishing is that you can print
large volumes of books without buying your own books back from the
publishing service. We have seen many “self publishers” lose out on
bulk sales of their books because the cost of buying back the books
eats any possible profits. The true self publisher can shop around
for the best print costs in order to make a large sale feasible.
Quality of product is a huge advantage of true
self publishing. Experienced
book buyers can spot a publishing service book a mile away. They
have a “cookie cutter” look, barely acceptable design and inferior
quality of editing. Media personnel immediately dismiss such books
and volume buyers will not even open the cover. Those professionals
place their reputations on the line when selling books, so they look
for superior quality and good perceived value (great quality for a
good price).
There is no substitute for pride of ownership. There is no
substitute for knowing that you have created a superior product.
There is no greater satisfaction for seeing your book sell. Stay in
control of your book, create a product that other people want and
reap the rewards. If you plan to self publish – SELF publish.

Questions from Self Publishers
Q: "I published my
book through a “self publishing” service. The book retails for
$10.95 and it costs me $4.95 to buy the book from the publishing
service. Where can I sell my book?"
A: Your market is very limited. A distributor will approach book
stores but you must pay the book store at least 40% of the retail
price and the distributor will probably take 15%, so bookstore sales
are out of the question. Volume buyers, such as display marketers,
catalogs and discount retailers require a 70% to 80% discount, so
they are also eliminated from the equation. You might be able to do
some fund raisers for charities or some sales to the corporate
market, depending on the subject matter of the book.
Back-of-the-room sales can be very good if you are a professional
speaker. Website sales might work, again depending on the subject
matter – if you have written about a topic that is widely searched
on the internet, you could do quite well. If you had actually SELF
published to keep your print costs down, your market would be much,
much wider.

What Everyone
Believed: A Memoir of Intuition and Awakening
Christine Hoeflich, Author
www.amazon.com
What is the “Great Shift” in consciousness really
about? Learning to trust the divine connection within more than
anyone or anything outside oneself. This practical guide details the
amazing process for developing trust in our intuition (necessary for
personal growth, for navigating crises, and for discovering our
unique contribution towards “The Great Shift”). “Ask and it is
given” refers to this deeper purpose: once begun, we receive the
gifts of interconnectedness—insights, serendipitous events,
synchronicity, and universal cooperation—that give life meaning,
clarity, and ease. This compelling memoir—and the story of all of
us—will forever change our understanding of life’s purpose.
